1986 was filled with a lot of exploration of different band members. After a few shows Tony Davis was replaced on bass by Carl Citchanski. Carl also went to school with Richard, Mike and Tony. For the first few months of 1986 a second guitar player Tony Golec was added to 7th heaven. The entire band at that time all went to school together at Forest View in Arlington Heights, IL. That was the last time the school was open, as it closed after that year. During the summer Tony Golec was replaced by Dan O'Brien for the summer. In the fall, Tony DiGiulio and Richard Hofherr went to Elk Grove High School, Mike Mooshey moved to Palatine and went to Palatine High School. While at Elk Grove, Tony and Richard met Dave Carrozzo and asked him to join the band on bass. Meanwhile, Mike was at Palatine where he met Alex Krompic, who would become the first full time crew member. (Alex now works for the country band "Lonestar"). Mike had also heard about some other players Sean Smith & Dean Cutinelli. Dean joined 7th heaven as a second guitarist in 1986. Dean brought a great sense of writing that complimented Richard writing and the two of them would give Tony DiGiulio a lot of material to write. By this time the band was playing mostly original music by age 16. There were 3 recording sessions with this line-up. The bands song "The Time Has Come" was close to being considered for "Nightmare on Elm Street" for the soundtrack.
The bands first club show was at the Thirsty Whale on March 23, 1986. Because the band was unknown, the booking agent at the Thirsty Whale (Tony LaBarbera) suggested the band be listed as a "Ratt Tribute band", so the band had to quickly learn some Ratt songs so they could have the gig. After a successful show there the band was able to drop the "Ratt tribute" tag and just be "7th heaven". One of the youngest bands to ever play that bar, the band quickly became a favorite of the rock scene.
In the fall, Mike Mooshey would move to Morton Grove, IL and go to Niles West High School. Being that he was so far away at the time he quit the band. At Elk Grove High School, Richard had met Jim Bluthardt and asked him to join 7th heaven as the bands drummer. Jim was the bands drummer for a short time.
In the fall, after a band practice, Richard was driving Mike home and while waiting for a train to pass was rear-ended at 75 miles per hour by a drunk driver while at a dead stop. The accident was so bad that Mike was stuck in the car while the train was fast approaching. Since the car was on the tracks and the engine stopped, Richard pushed the car off the tracks saving the car from being hit by the train and saving Mike's life. That accident destroyed Richard back and it was determined by doctors that he would have to cease playing all sports or risk being paralyzed.
The year ended with the band playing a show at the Thirsty Whale on December 21.
