7th Heaven - Silver
Every Once in a while a debut album arrives out of the blue and knocks you off your feet. This is one such album. Two in fact. ‘Silver’ is a two CD set from new Chicago band, 7th Heaven,
a band name with progrock connotations.
Nothing could be further from the truth - ‘Silver’ is a gilt edged hybrid of powerful, big hearted melodic rock in the Harem Scarem vein,
married to boy band-esque hooks and vocal chorus phrasing, occasionally put to techno/contemporary rhythms.
This what Def Leppard were aiming at with ‘X’, and Harem Scarem with Rubber, but went off target cause they didn’t have
either the nous or the nerve to go that extra mile, the one that makes all the difference.
There are times when I wish the guitars were further up in the mix and that the lead vocals didn’t occasionally seem a little detached
from the music. But these are small complaints and are no doubt the result of limited production funds, which, to his credit,
have been stretched into corners he had no right to reach by Producer/ guitarist Richard Hofherr.
Unarguably, ‘Silver‘ is a potent collection that’s full of crisp invention (Ethereal, Medicated), irresistible harmonies and
infectious hooks (Cellophane, Undone) and cool, powerful melodic rock (While You Dream, Ghost Of Me).
The band has recently attracted the attention of MTV without pandering to corporate rock and maybe, just maybe will help
the popular music wheel turn the complete cycle.
Highly Recommended.
