Powerplay magazine's AOR Underground Column - U.K.
7th Heaven - Silver First up this month are hot newcomers 7th Heaven from America. Their second CD "Silver" is currently causing major waves on the melodic rock underground. It seems that everyone is likening them to "X" period Def Leppard - a very lazy reference point if you ask me - as I see very little Leppard influences contained on this disc, but what I do see is a band that can carry a myriad of styles and make them all sound original. One minute they can sound like Linkin Park and the next they're coming across all boy-band in the style of BB Mak and Invertigo. Split into two discs "Black" and "White", and at thirty tracks in length, this double CD is certainly value for money. For me it's the "White" disk that is the most entertaining and diverse with songs like "Truth", "Face Of Terror", "Ordinary World" and "Shelter" all making this a CD that will elevate 7th Heaven from out of the ordinary and into the big league where they belong. AOR fans need fear not as there is plenty of melodic songs that will appeal the bulk of which can be found on the "Black" disc. Stuff like "Cellophane", "Gravity" and "Ghost Of Me" will appeal to anyone with an ounce of melody in their body. While people like Harem Scarem and Eric Martin (lets be honest they play the AOR game strictly for the money that is offered them) try desperately to break out of their AOR confines by using a more modern approach, 7th Heaven deliver their music with a passion that comes from the heart and not the wallet. This is the album that most old school AOR bands like the aforementioned would kill to make, all I can say is "Stick To What You're Good At Lads." One of the best independent CDs you will hear this year. www.powerplaymagazine.co.uk |
